Martin County Quilters: Lecture and Workshop

What a wonderful time and experience I had once more teaching my workshops. This time I was up North in Florida, in Jensen Beach, to be more precise. I taught 2 workshops and gave one lecture to the Martin County Quilters. I simply had the best time, enthusiastic students and the Holiday In was a great 'host'. Thank you all up there once more.

Lauderhill Art Center

My new studio at the LAC (Lauderhill Art Center) has a freshly painted floor now. Just a few more fixes, some more beautifying and I am ready to go, meaning move in. Oh I forgot my new studio 'furniture'. My husband will build me my furniture, am I lucky or what? A new studio and custom made art furniture?

Solo Exhibition: Anne Kolb

A large body of my art work can be seen until October 30 at the Anne Kolb Nature Center in Hollywood FL.

Water Pieces

Inspiration

Most of my artwork is inspired by nature, the vastly different landscapes I encounter while traveling, the seasons and the feelings they invoke in me. I then weave social and political issues and personal thoughts into my general idea, which creates the foundation for a new piece.

You are looking at a large body of my work, dealing with water related issues around our globe. It is my strong believe, that one of the next big wars will not be about land or oil but about water, or the lack of it.

Living in southern Florida exposes me to more than just lush, rich tropical life and beautiful waters but also brushfires, floods, droughts, spills and pollution. One of my main concerns right now is the future of the Everglades. They are an ecosystem in peril. Since the 1950’s a vast system of canals and levees have interrupted the natural flow of the water through the Everglades, sending the fresh water into the sea while drying out the Everglades’ wetlands. In addition pollution from farming and South Florida’s urban sprawl made the situation worse. And to make the situation even more difficult, Central and South Florida grew much faster than anticipated, using huge amounts of water. Conserving water is very unpopular and very few people seem to understand its importance for the Everglades. Restoring and saving them leads to constant fights and is a continuous struggle. It is heartbreaking and makes me furious at times to observe how piece by piece the Everglades are dying and the steps to safe them are so minimal.

Besides pointing my fingers to the previously stated issues, I also want my work to impress on the viewer, how grand and magnificent our water world and nature is. The tremendous joy and inspiration we can draw from our surroundings is for me as an artists, a wonderful daily experience and something I do not take for granted.

Flower Power 5

In the heat of the Miami summer days (it is actually not too bad) I finished another 'Flower Power' piece. One of my favorite bromeliads was in bloom and is the inspiration.

Lauderhill Art Center

What a great and creative work day we had at the LAC. The resident artists and the artists of the exhibitions 'small space' all worked on a project for 6 hours we then took the 'small works' show down and hung our new work. Looks great. Since I forgot to bring my camera I hope I will get some pics of one of the art friends which I then will post. I enjoyed every minute oft he creative day. Very inspiring.

New Studio

... the hard part is over, my new studio is finished, I just have to move back in. It looks so cool, I wonder how long it will take me to get used to my things being in a different place. I am very excited and motivated, and my back for sure will appreciate the new table, much less bending.... check back later, pictures will follow.

Under construction

Since my whole studio is torn apart I might as well use the time to clean out all my STUFF. One of my moments in life where I say 'NEVER EVER will I buy things I do not need. Yeah right, how long will that last. After all I am redoing my studio in order to have MORE space right! It is exciting!!!!

New sewing machine

Oh boy, what an experience. I LOVE my new Juki. Since I am in the middle of remodeling my whole studio I could only do little trials with my new machine, but so far I am very excited. There is one thing I will have to get used to. On my Bernina I could lift the needle by stepping on the back of the pedal, on my Juki that same motion will cut the threads. But this is a great feature, just takes time to get used to. Also I do not have to hold my threads anymore when I start sewing. I have done some free motion stitching on one of my smaller pieces, it worked like a charm. I cannot wait to try the machine out on one of my big pieces, but for that I need my new studio, at least the table. In a few days I will be able to get to that. having said all these nice things I still LOVE my Bernina, she is still part of me.

Juki TL 2010 Q

I am about ready to 'test drive' my new sewing machine. I almost feel like a traitor, having been sewing on a Bernina for many decades I treated myself to the Juki TL 2010Q a quilting machine. How exciting, the Juki is supposed to be my Bernina' big strong brother, a 'tractor' to give my Bernina a break. Besides being much faster the Juki has a bigger area for my stiff, hard to manage art work, for sure a wonderful feature to have. More after my 'new life' experience.

A Great Feeling

There is just no better feeling than to put on my favorite music, go into the studio and dive into my 'zone'. Once in a while I lift my head, take a deep breath, look at my beautiful view and dive right back into my world. On a day like that the result can only be good no matter what, simply because it felt so good.

A piece in progress: Skyline , detail
I started the piece in February, the cooling tower in the back ground has no relation to the nuclear disaster in Japan, this is poor coincidence!

Glass Gallery Opening

... here are some impressions of the opening night at the 'Glass Gallery'.

The Creative Native Gallery

Sad news.... lets keep our fingers crossed that the gallery will re-open soon.

It is with great disappointment that a decision has been made to close The Creative Native Gallery, effective immediately, due to structural issues that have developed in the building that the gallery is housed in. I am hoping that the gallery will re-open at some point in the future, and plan to do everything within my power to see that it does.

I’d like to thank you for your interest and support of the gallery and its’ artists over the years, and invite you to contact me should you have an interest in any of the art previously on display at the gallery.

Best Regards,

Pam Moody

Judging, work shop, lecture

Another great week on the west coast. Tuesday was gallery day in Tampa, Wednesday I judged the 'journey 2011' show in Cape Coral, ( if I remember correctly I looked and judged 172 art quilts in one day) Thursday was workshop day and Friday was the lecture. I had the best time, my brain was working hard, I do not remember when I saw so many wonderful art quilts in one place. I am back home inspired and back on my sewing machine!
